Bahama Soul CLub best

A few years back I got an email blurb from Giant Step Promotion in NYC, an organization KCRW used to do concerts with here in LA.  They featured a download of a band called The Bahama Soul Club, from their album “Rhythm is What Makes Jazz Jazz.”  The cover was lifted from a classic Blue Note side by trumpeter Kenny Dorham, so it caught my eye right away.

The sampler cut was called “But Rich Rhythms” and featured the voice of the late great alto sax player, Cannonball Adderley, famous for his quintet, his work with Joe Zawinul and Charles Lloyd, and even more so, with Miles Davis on “Kind of Blue” and other albums.

United Vibrations

Three brothers — Kareem,  Ahmad & Yussef Dayes — along with saxophonist Wayne Francis formed United Vibrations back in 2003. They honed their skills by busking on the streets of London and their live sets are off the hook.

Blending Jazz, Afrobeat, Funk, Ska Reggae and bursting full of energy, United Vibrations are a London four-piece that has really set themselves apart.

They’re hot on their eco-friendly credentials & they’re motivated to bring back Fela Kuti’s combination of music and political activist. And the music is quality!

The proceeds of their debut release will go towards a housing co-operative that they’re planning.

Their debut album “Galaxies not Ghettos” is out now on 12-tone and you can get a taste below.

Living Like I Do” by SBTRKT

SBTRKT is a London-based music producer who has been steadily building his fan base over the last 18 months or so.

Though he’s honed his music skills under different guises, he prefers to keep his identity secret, which allows him to be judged on the music alone. He wears a mask on stage and in interviews that reveals only his eyes.

With tight production values and some great song writing skills, SBTRKT is a rising star here in the UK, gaining support from the underground that has started to tip out into the wide domain.

His more well-known tracks on the underground scene, including “Living Like I Do”, include the vocals of a talented singer named Sampha.
