One of our New Year Resolution
This year my crew and I decided that one of our resolution would be training to mountains walks…all together. We are about to enrol to a “Walking up the mountains” programme organised by CAI, the Italian National Alpine Club. It will be a wonderful occasion to discover the many beautiful mountains that frame this corner of the World: the North East Italian Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Today’s challenge was not part of the programme but something we wanted to do testing our ability to reach the top all together as a family. We targeted Monte Sabotino, famous or maybe infamous for 6 of the 12 battles (the Isonzo battles) fought by brave men (Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies) during WWI.
Our crew has been amazing: the twins - almost 5 years old - showed resilience and managed to reach the top without too many stops. Their big sisters are almost pros!
We walked along the crest until we discovered a little lodge just across the border with Slovenia. We visited the small WWI museum and then sat down for lunch: gnocchi bolognese for the children and jota, a succulent soup to warm up the adults.
After lunch we ventured into some of the many tunnels dug by the armies and then slowly made our way back down towards the car. It has been a beautiful day.
The view from up there is amazing. The snow caps of the Austro-Italian Alps on one side and the sea of the north Adriatic on the other.
Looking forward to the next challenge.
My Yamaha XT500 ‘82 Autumn Short Trips: No.2
What a day and what a ride! This time I rode together with Dumbut, a friend from the XT500 club. We met in Forum Julii, North East Italy, and drove without any particular plans along the “Strada di Solarie” reaching up to 1200 mt of altitude.
Check the pictures too.
This road is partially running along the border with Slovenia. WWI & WWII men fought courageously along these mountains ridges.
Awesome ride: I discovered places I never been before and will certainly go back there again.
