His brother Barry wrote the most popular songs but Robin had a very loud and intense voice and together with Maurice will always help us remember that Bee Gees were one of the band that turned disco into a global phenomenon.
Shall we all play Night Fever going home tonight?

Another sad day today: after legendary bass player Donal “Duck” Dunn now it’s Donna Summer? Rest in peace guys, you’ll be remembered forever.
This was the song that introduced Summer, producer Giorgio Moroder and disco itself to Middle America. The full-length version was 17 minutes of Summer in paroxysms of arousal, accompanied by a hypnotic synth/percussion arrangement. The radio edit chopped out the X-rated segments, but left listeners in no doubt that Summer, her voice a languid conduit for Moroder’s insinuating keyboard washes, was working herself up to the point of…well, her groans said it all. That such a singular song reached No 2 in the Billboard chart – to put it in context, one of that year’s biggest albums was Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run – attested to its power.

A few years back I got an email blurb from Giant Step Promotion in NYC, an organization KCRW used to do concerts with here in LA. They featured a download of a band called The Bahama Soul Club, from their album “Rhythm is What Makes Jazz Jazz.” The cover was lifted from a classic Blue Note side by trumpeter Kenny Dorham, so it caught my eye right away.
The sampler cut was called “But Rich Rhythms” and featured the voice of the late great alto sax player, Cannonball Adderley, famous for his quintet, his work with Joe Zawinul and Charles Lloyd, and even more so, with Miles Davis on “Kind of Blue” and other albums.
