This weekend it’s Cantine Aperte time.
Organized by the Movimento Turismo del Vino, Cantine Aperte 2012 celebrates 20 years of consecutive activity, with events all over Italy, to discover excellent wines while visiting the land of their production.
The appointment is, as always, for the last Sunday of May, or May 27th, 2012, with some initiatives that will start already from Saturday 26 May. The underlying theme of this year is Divino Sognar, or DiWine Dreaming, to explore scenarios, fragrances and flavors linked to the beauty and goodness of the wine.
My crew and I will be visiting a few friends in this corner of North East Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia. We’ve been invited for a bbq and some sampling at the cellar of one of my favourite Malvasia Istriana producers, Giovanni Blason. IMHO his Malvasia, recently awarded by Decanter (read the article here), is a perfect balance between quality and price.
This is his London importer.

Always happy to post articles about this corner of the World, I today read about Tara’s ”punting” experience in Croatia.
On a recent wine trip to the beautiful region of Istria in Croatia, fellow wine blogger Donald Edwards, showed us the art of Wine Punting: drinking wine out of the punt of an empty wine bottle.
Always up for anything, Joe Wadsack joined in and so did winemaker of Roxanich wines, Mladen Rozanic – not sure he’d ever drunk his own wine quite like this before!

London Wine shops: Vini Italiani
I just read a nice review by Denise (The Wine Sleuth) about probably one of the largest Italian Wine Specialist in London: “Vini Italiani”.
Italy is one of my favourite wine countries because I’m always discovering a new wine or variety or sometimes, both! Everyone knows Barolo and Chianti, perhaps Nero d’Avola and, of course, the ubiquitous pinot grigio but there are so many other varieties and wines waiting to be discovered.
Couldn’t agree more, Denise. Come and visit the North East: Collio is waiting for you!

I love this period of the year. Plenty of occasion to discover interesting wine and food.
This weekend it’s the time to sample Prosecco: Vino in Villa It is an International Festival that takes place in the Valdobbiadene area from 19th to 21st May in Susegana, Treviso, Veneto.
This year the event will adopt an historical approach starting at the end of the 19th century and will take visitors through the events that succeeded in winning over the world without losing its special identity.

Overseas wine bloggers discover one of Friuli gems
I am very happy to post here a review by Do Bianchi about one of the greatest grapes we harvest in this corner of the World: Friuli Venezia Giulia, North East Italy.
Do Bianchi has been recently here with a few other UK and US wine bloggers during the 2nd edition of COF week.

Nice review of Sauvignon from this corner of the World.
Friuli has a deep commitment to cultivating the grapes peculiar to the area–Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, Schioppettino, Refosco, to name a few–but also has a dedication to developing and understanding those international varieties with their own long standing local tradition, and the continued potential for strong relationship with the local terroir.
